  • About Me

The world is big. I am small.

I learned that while completing two semesters abroad, first in Heidelberg, Germany, then in Salamanca, Spain. There are billions of people on this planet, and I am just one of the several hundred million that belong to the United States. I have been fortunate enough to experience a variety of cultures that differ from mine in any number of ways, and I did so while earning my Bachelor’s Degree at Gettysburg College. I was afforded the opportunities to hear the Chancellor of Germany speak in person, to tour the European Parliament in Strasbourg, and to admire the Alhambra in Andalusia. All of these experiences and more shaped not only my personal world view, but my education and my career.

Post-graduation, I improved my intercultural competence while teaching English to refugees in my hometown of Pittsburgh. From there, I moved to Madrid, Spain and spent two years teaching English, bettering my Spanish, and learning all I could about Spain and Europe. I will never forget the people I met during these adventures or the lessons I learned from them.

Studying and working abroad were such eye-opening experiences for me that I want to dedicate my career to assisting future students in their endeavors to travel, explore, and learn. I want to them to discover not only where they fit into the world, but also how the world fits into them.

That’s what brought me to graduate school. I earned a Master's Degree in International Education Management at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. It was there that I learned many of the skills that I will need to thrive in the field of International Education. During my last semester of my degree, I completed a practicum in the Center for Global Engagement at Robert Morris University outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This position afforded me the opportunity to put my new skills into practice while still learning and growing as a professional.

Since earning my Master of Arts degree with distinction, I have been lucky enough to begin to work as a Study Abroad Specialist at Robert Morris University. I have gotten been able to help my students begin to explore the world outside of their comfort zone, and I feel very fortunate to be able to watch them grow through their experiences abroad.

There are many things I have learned through the course of my MA and the beginnings of my career in this field. However, there is still much left for me to learn, and I don't ever plan on stopping. I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me.

Below are some samples of work I have done in the field of International Education.

    Engaging Globally: A Celebration Video

    May 2020

The landscape of higher education changed dramatically during the Spring 2020 semester, with campuses closing, courses going virtual, and semester abroad experiences cut short. In response to these changes and our inability to host our traditional Global Recognition Ceremony, I created a video tribute to our graduating seniors to show off their global engagement throughout the past four years.

    Re-Entry Programming

    May 2016

Returning to the United States after an educational experience abroad can be difficult, especially when it comes to knowing how to handle cultural readjustment and the best way to incorporate study abroad in the job search. In collaboration with two colleagues, I designed a re-entry program that covered these topics for University of Pittsburgh study abroad returnees. This program includes videos, workshops, and a method for assessment for continuous improvement.

    Intercultural Competence Workshop

    October 2016

During my practicum at Robert Morris University, I developed an Introduction to Intercultural Competence (ICC) workshop for students in the Global Village Living Learning Community as well as other undergraduate students. Click here for the Facilitator's Guide and here for the accompanying PowerPoint.

    Risk Management Documents

    January 2016

As part of the course Cross-Cultural Crisis Management, I designed a risk audit and vulnerability assessment for an Education Abroad Office planning to send students to Morocco. Additionally, I wrote a pull-out document for a faculty leader to use during a faculty-led program in Morocco in the case of a missing student. Click here to read the risk audit and vulnerability assessment, and click here for the pull-out document.

    International Student Orientation Video

    April 2016

This video has been designed to introduce international students to the tipping culture of the United States. It explains what tipping is and why we do it and provides some general guidelines for tipping in different situations.

    International Education Organization Poster Fair

    September 2015

After researching my chosen organization, CIEE, I created a poster to display the most relevant information that would most be of interest to my colleagues in the field of International Education. I then presented my poster at a fair, giving information to those who stopped by and answering any questions they had.
